At Supportive Pillar Foundation (SPF), we are excited to celebrate the successful completion of the sixth edition of our Skill Acquisition Programme (SAP 6.0)—another significant milestone in our commitment to empowering individuals with practical skills, knowledge, and opportunities to build a better future.
Our two-week intensive skills acquisition programme in Lagos brought together participants from different backgrounds who were eager to learn, develop their talents, and take meaningful steps towards becoming self-reliant.
From baking and pastry to tailoring, wig making, makeup, event decoration, and other vocational skills, SAP 6.0 provided our participants with hands-on training designed to equip them with skills they can develop into businesses, careers, and sustainable sources of income.
For us, SAP 6.0 was more than just a training programme. It was a journey of learning, growth, resilience, friendship, empowerment, and new possibilities.
Two Weeks of Intensive Learning and Practical Training
For two weeks, our training centre was filled with the energy and excitement of participants learning, practising, asking questions, making mistakes, improving, and becoming more confident in their chosen fields.
We divided participants into different departments based on their areas of interest. This edition offered training in:
- Baking and Pastry
- Tailoring
- Bag Making
- Wig Making and Revamping
- Makeup and Gele
- Turban and Fascinator
- Adire Making
- Event Decoration and Styling
- Hairdressing
Through each department, we provided hands-on learning opportunities that allowed our participants to gain practical knowledge rather than relying solely on theoretical lessons.
Our goal was simple but powerful: to give people practical skills they can build upon and potentially transform into businesses, careers, or additional sources of income.
Throughout the two weeks, our facilitators worked closely with their students, teaching the fundamentals of their chosen courses while encouraging creativity, discipline, consistency, and excellence.
For many of our participants, SAP 6.0 was also an opportunity to discover abilities they may not have realised they possessed.
SPF SAP 6.0 Recap: Beyond Learning a Skill
At SPF, we believe that skill acquisition goes beyond teaching someone how to make a product or provide a service.
It is about creating opportunities for the underprivileged to become more independent, confident, and economically empowered.
Through SAP 6.0, we wanted our participants to understand that acquiring a vocational skill can be the beginning of a much bigger journey.
Someone who learns baking can eventually build a pastry business. A participant who learns tailoring can establish a fashion brand. Someone trained in event decoration can provide services for celebrations and corporate events, while participants trained in makeup, hairdressing, wig making, or bag making can build a client base and develop sustainable businesses.
This is what skills development and economic empowerment mean to us—providing people with practical tools that can help them create opportunities for themselves and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
A Graduation Day Filled With Celebration and Reflection
After two weeks of intensive training, we gathered with our participants, facilitators, volunteers, guests, and members of the SPF team for the graduation ceremony.
For us, the graduation day was more than a formal conclusion to the programme. It was a celebration of the effort, commitment, progress, and achievements of everyone who contributed to the success of SAP 6.0.
The atmosphere was filled with excitement as our participants celebrated completing their training and looked forward to what comes next.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was the series of insightful sessions delivered by different speakers.
Through their various sessions, the speakers encouraged our graduating participants to look beyond the completion of the training and begin thinking about their next steps.
Our participants were reminded that graduation is not the end of their journey. Rather, it is the beginning of an opportunity to practise their skills, continue learning, improve their craft, build meaningful networks, create businesses, and remain committed to personal development.
The message was clear: a skill becomes valuable when it is put into practice.
Celebrating Excellence Through Awards
Another major highlight of our graduation ceremony was the presentation of awards to individuals and departments who distinguished themselves throughout the programme.
We used the awards to recognise hard work, commitment, leadership, excellence, punctuality, and positive contributions to the success of SAP 6.0.
Awards were presented in several categories, including:
- Best Facilitator of the Year
- Best Department
- Best Course Representative
- Most Inspiring Students
- Overall Most Punctual Student
For us, these awards were not just about recognising achievements. They were also a way of appreciating individuals who went above and beyond during the programme and encouraging everyone to continue pursuing excellence.
Celebrating Our Most Inspiring Students
One of the most emotional and memorable moments of the graduation ceremony was recognising two participants as our Most Inspiring Students.
The first inspiring student was from the Makeup and Gele Department.
She is a special student who is unable to hear or speak. Despite the challenges she faces, she made the decision to participate in SAP 6.0 and remained committed to learning throughout the training.
Her determination and resilience stood out to us.
She participated in the training, learned alongside other students, practised her skills, and demonstrated that challenges do not have to determine what a person can achieve.
Her journey throughout SAP 6.0 reminded us of the power of determination, courage, and the willingness to learn.
Her recognition was not simply about her performance in the classroom. It was also about the courage she displayed by showing up, learning, practising, and refusing to allow her circumstances to stop her.
Her story captured one of the values we hold strongly at SPF: everyone deserves an opportunity to learn, grow, and build a better future.
Age Is Not a Barrier to Learning
Our second Most Inspiring Student was the eldest participant in the programme.
She participated in the Turban and Fascinator Department, and her presence throughout the programme was a powerful reminder to us that learning has no age limit.
At a stage in life when many people may choose to stop learning new things, she made the decision to step forward and acquire a new skill.
She showed up, participated actively, and remained committed to learning throughout the programme.
Her participation challenged the idea that vocational education or skills acquisition training is only for young people.
Her story demonstrated that it is never too late to learn something new, pursue a passion, or develop a skill.
Together, these two inspiring students represented two powerful lessons for us all: our circumstances should not stop us, and our age should not stop us either.
Their recognition became one of the most memorable moments of SAP 6.0.
Recognising Punctuality and Commitment
We also recognised the importance of discipline and punctuality by presenting an award to the Overall Most Punctual Student.
The award went to a participant from the Tailoring Department.
While punctuality may seem like a simple quality, we believe it is an important part of personal and professional development.
Being consistently present and on time demonstrates commitment, responsibility, discipline, and respect for the learning process.
By recognising punctuality, we reinforced the importance of developing not only technical skills but also the personal qualities required to succeed in the workplace and in business.
Celebrating Our Facilitators and Departments
Behind every successful training programme are people who dedicate their time, knowledge, and energy to teaching others.
For this reason, our graduation ceremony also provided an opportunity for us to celebrate the facilitators who guided our participants throughout the two weeks.
The Best Facilitator of the Year award recognised outstanding dedication and contribution to the learning experience of our participants.
We also recognised the Best Department, celebrating the department that demonstrated exceptional performance, teamwork, commitment, and participation throughout the programme.
The Best Course Representative was equally recognised for leadership, responsibility, and support within their department.
These recognitions reminded us that creating a successful learning environment requires teamwork and the commitment of everyone involved.
From Basic Training to Advanced Learning
One of the exciting developments from SAP 6.0 is the opportunity for some of our participants to progress beyond the basic training.
A few outstanding participants from each department were selected to proceed to an advanced class.
This next stage will provide the selected participants with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge, improve their techniques, sharpen their creativity, and take their skills to a higher level.
We believe that skill acquisition is most effective when learning does not stop at the introductory stage.
By creating opportunities for further development, we are helping participants move from simply knowing a skill to becoming more confident and competent practitioners.
For the selected participants, the advanced class represents another step towards mastery and greater opportunities.
Building a Future Through Skills
The successful completion of SAP 6.0 reminds us of the importance of investing in practical education and vocational skills training.
In a world where economic independence is increasingly important, having a practical skill can provide individuals with an additional pathway towards self-reliance.
Skills such as tailoring, baking, makeup, hairdressing, wig making, bag making, event decoration, and Adire production can become the foundation for small businesses and entrepreneurial ventures.
However, we know that the journey does not end with receiving a certificate.
The real impact begins when our graduates take what they have learned and put it into practice.
We encourage our participants to continue practising their skills, building portfolios, serving customers, improving their craft, networking with other professionals, and exploring opportunities to start or expand their businesses.
With dedication and consistency, the skills acquired during SAP 6.0 can become more than classroom lessons. They can become tools for economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.
Our Commitment to Empowering the Less Privileged
The successful completion of SAP 6.0 reflects our continued commitment at Supportive Pillar Foundation to skill development, empowerment, and community impact.
Through our Skills Acquisition Programmes, we continue to create opportunities for individuals to acquire practical skills that can help them become more economically productive and self-reliant.
The programme also demonstrates the importance of creating inclusive learning opportunities where people from different backgrounds and age groups can participate.
From participants eager to build careers to the elderly woman who decided to learn a new skill, and the special student whose resilience inspired everyone around her, SAP 6.0 showed us once again that empowerment is most meaningful when opportunities are made accessible to everyone.
A New Chapter Begins
As we celebrate the successful completion of SAP 6.0, we know that a new chapter is beginning for our graduates.
They leave the programme with more than certificates. They leave with new knowledge, practical skills, experiences, friendships, confidence, and the responsibility to put their learning into action.
For the selected participants moving on to advanced training, another stage of learning awaits.
For every other graduate, the challenge is to keep practising, keep learning, and keep growing.
The journey may have started with a two-week training programme, but its impact has the potential to continue for years.
Just like SAP 5.0, SAP 6.0 has once again demonstrated our belief that when people are allowed to learn, they can develop the confidence and capacity to create new possibilities for themselves, their families, and their communities.
As we celebrate the successful completion of SAP 6.0, we also celebrate every participant who showed up, every facilitator who shared their knowledge, every volunteer who contributed, every speaker who inspired our graduates, and everyone who played a role in making the programme possible.
The graduation ceremony may have marked the end of the training, but for our graduates, it is only the beginning.
